Drupal 4.7.0 released

Well, this is bittersweet news. I'm excited about the new features, and it's been a long time coming, but upgrading scares the bejeezus outta me, based on previous experience.. I'm currently working on a test site; hope to have this one converted soon.

Upgrade

Good luck! Smiling

drupal stuff

I didn't wanna bore everyone with another post about the upgrade, so I figured here would be a good place for me to vent anyone who cared to read/write about it.
For the record, I didn't purposefully delete the comments that were here; at one point I had to revert to an archived copy of the site, which had everything except for the last 2 comments in the database. Sorry. Here's where I stand right now - any input is most welcome.
Cons:
  • The smileys are gone. I mean they're still there, uploaded and waiting; so far I just can't get the site to put the little pictures in place of the text in the posts. I'm thinking the module will eventually be made 4.7 compatible, but in the meantime, I'm tired of hacking away at it.
  • The "blog this" function thing is gone. That's my most immediate priority - I'd walk a mile for my remote control. I enjoy blogging on-the-fly, and I'm not happy with my alternatives.
  • The search function is gone. This should be resolved soon - I've already submitted a request to my host; if they refuse, I think I have a workaround.
  • The "rainbow" links only work one page deep into the site. Meaning, "slackdaddy.org" works, "slackdaddy.org/node" works, but "slackdaddy.org/node/123" does not. What bothers me about this is that I'm sure it's my fault for sloppy coding.
  • Drupal suddenly got anal-retentive about my sloppy coding, but apparently I'm not the only sloppy coder; the new version is so big on being xhtml valid that it has a problem with embedded google and youtube video (as well as a lot of drupal modules).
  • My biggest gripe is that I had always used a filtered-html input by default, with certain allowed tags I regularly used, but not "full html" which could allow users to use suspicious attributes (really?).. But after the upgrade, I had to manually go through every single post ever made on this site, and change them to "full html". I really had better stuff to do.
  • Oh wait, the kicker: The tags work just fine on new posts (except for the embedded). So I'm using "filtered html" again. You know, until 4.8 comes out. Hopefully then I'll have twice as much content to alter. I came really close to saying fuggit and going back to the old version - Somehow I'd forgotten that when something new first comes out, it's still going to require some a lot of debugging. I'm pretty bad about remembering that.
    Pros:
  • Ah, read it yerself.
  • The thing is, I do love it. Updates are coming soon, and hopefully they'll address a few issues I have.
Meanwhile, developers have a lot more room to play with Web 2.0 development now, and I'm excited to see what they come up with. The out-of-the-box use of Ajax is encouraging. Honestly, I've been too busy ironing out kinks to really look into some of the new options, though I've noticed some significant improvements in the core functionality - things which used to require an add-on, etc... But, as of time of post, I think the only new (noticeable) thing I've added is the "printer-friendly version" option on nodes. Too bad this is probably the most text ever entered, and I don't think comments even show in the printer-friendly bit.
Not that anyone would ever wanna print read this. /vent.txt
